As Research Manager and leader of Driver-Vehicle Interaction group, reported
directly to Executive Vice President, managed contracts and collaborations with
universities worldwide, and startup companies in California. Managed a multi-
disciplinary team of Engineers and Researchers, resulting in strategic
relationships and prototype systems demonstrated all the way up to Akio Toyoda.
As Senior Researcher in the Advanced Research Group, reported directly to VP
(Japan) and Senior Advisor (USA), evaluating new business areas based on
emerging technologies. Example: prediction of network availability to enable
an in-vehicle system operate reliably when network is not reliable.
Developed company’s first speech-based driver assistant system that combines
the driving context with speech, resulting in intelligent response.
Our small group was the company’s most productive as measured by patents
granted and papers accepted.

As Research Engineer, negotiated and won contracts with Oracle
and Toyota. Designed and built mobile Speech Accessor to database query system
for small businesses. Used SRI Language Modeling Toolkit, Dynaspeak, Agent
Technology from Dejima.

Speech recognition software for telephone IVR. Worked with Mike Cohen's
Dialog Research group, in product management (QA and release) during IPO
very busy time. Performed analytics on data from large deployments
using Cygwin (unix), Perl, HTML, CGI, Java Beans, CVS.

Advanced Telecommunications Research Laboratory, Seika, Kyoto, Japan.
Invited Engineer. 1995-1999. Managed multi-national team that designed, built
and deployed the ATR-MATRIX speech translation system that gained nationwide
news coverage, and was presented to the Japanese government at the Ministry
of Posts and Telecommunications. Resulted in 5 years renewed funding.
